Elon Musk’s “Kekius Maximus” Persona Fuels Crypto and Gaming Speculation

Elon Musk sparked curiosity on Tuesday by changing his X profile name to “Kekius Maximus” and replacing his avatar with an image of the popular Pepe the Frog character dressed in gladiator armor.

The billionaire, who has almost 210 million followers on the platform he acquired in 2022, has yet to explain the reason behind the name change, according to the New York Post. However, online observers suggest that the name may be a quirky blend of Pepe the Frog and Maximus Decimus Meridius, Russell Crowe’s character from the 2000 film Gladiator. Musk’s new profile image features Pepe in golden armor holding a video game controller.

Pepe, originally from the “Boy’s Club” comic series, became controversial after allegedly being associated with white supremacist groups and the alt-right during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The Anti-Defamation League labeled the character a hate symbol, calling it the “Alt Right’s favorite meme.” However, Musk, along with many internet users, has rejected this association.

Musk teased his new moniker in a post on X, writing: “Kekius Maximus will soon reach level 80 in hardcore PoE,” with PoE referring to the popular video game Path of Exile 2, which Musk is known to play.

Interestingly, Kekius Maximus is also the name of a memecoin — a cryptocurrency linked to an online meme. Musk has previously influenced the crypto market, particularly with his support for Dogecoin. Following Musk’s profile changes, the Kekius Maximus cryptocurrency surged by over 900% on Tuesday afternoon, according to CoinGecko. It’s unclear whether Musk is involved with this specific memecoin.

In addition to the name change, rumors have emerged suggesting that Musk might be behind a super-fan burner account called Adrian Dittmann. This account has posted extensive praise for Musk, sparking speculation that Musk may be secretly running it. Musk has denied being Dittmann and mocked those claiming he is behind the account.

To add to the intrigue, Musk retweeted a post from the Dittmann account on Tuesday, which mentioned the Kekius Maximus saga: “Imagine you’re a journalist writing about Elon on X and it goes: ‘Elon Musk, aka Kekius Maximus, on X…’”
