OpenAI Reportedly Building X-Like Social Media App Powered by ChatGPT

OpenAI is reportedly developing its own social media platform similar to X (formerly Twitter), according to The Verge, which cited multiple sources familiar with the matter.

An internal prototype currently exists, with a focus on ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities and featuring a social feed, the report said. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been quietly seeking feedback from outsiders about the project, which remains in its early stages. It’s still unclear whether the platform will be launched as a standalone app or integrated into ChatGPT, The Verge added.

The potential launch of a social platform could further strain the already tense relationship between Altman and Elon Musk — the owner of X and a co-founder of OpenAI, who left the organization in 2018, years before it became a leader in generative AI.

Their feud has intensified over the past year. In February, a group of investors led by Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer to take control of OpenAI, which Altman quickly rejected with a “no thank you.”

Last year, Musk sued Altman and OpenAI, accusing them of straying from their original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity rather than for profit. Earlier this month, OpenAI filed a countersuit, claiming Musk had engaged in a pattern of harassment and was trying to disrupt its transition to a for-profit model. The case is set to go to jury trial in the spring of next year.

An OpenAI-run social network would also position the company as a direct competitor to Meta, which is reportedly working on a standalone Meta AI service. In response to media coverage of Meta’s plans back in February, Altman posted on X: “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”

Unlike OpenAI, both Meta and Musk’s X have access to extensive user-generated content — a valuable resource they use to train their AI models.
