Solana Retracts Controversial Ad Just Hours After Release Following Community Backlash

Solana has removed a promotional video for its upcoming conference in New York after it sparked controversy on social media. The ad, which was posted on Monday and taken down just hours later, continues to circulate online, drawing criticism from the crypto community.
Ad Sparks Debate Over Gender Themes
The video featured an individual named “America” undergoing therapy for what was described as “rational thinking syndrome.” During the session, a therapist encourages the individual to “come up with a new gender” or “focus on pronouns.” However, the character rejects this approach, declaring instead:
“I will lead the world in permissionless tech, build onchain, and reclaim my place as the beacon of innovation. I want to invent technologies, not genders.”
While the ad was intended to promote Solana’s May conference, it instead ignited backlash, with critics calling it insensitive toward gender issues. Some interpreted the video as dismissive of LGBTQ+ identities, branding it as anti-queer.
Industry Figures Criticize Solana’s Messaging
The crypto community swiftly reacted to the ad, with several industry voices condemning its message.
“Imagine thinking this is a good commercial,” wrote Adam Cochran, general partner at Cinneamhain Ventures, in a post on X. “The ‘mind virus’ that’s infected the nation is whatever weird circlejerk is going on in Silicon Valley where people are convinced they were oppressed and that this is cool or edgy.”
David McIntyre, former director of the Solana Foundation and current COO of DoubleZero, also weighed in, calling the video “horrendous.”
“If you want to celebrate America, why not keep the message positive instead of dunking on people and making light of serious cultural issues?” he added.
The controversy has led some to question whether the ad aligns with Solana’s stated principles. The Solana Foundation’s code of conduct affirms a commitment to “diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect.” Critics argue that the video contradicts these values and could alienate members of the community.
It is worth noting that this controversy comes as Solana marks the fifth anniversary of its mainnet launch. Since going live on March 16, 2020, the blockchain has achieved key milestones, including surpassing 408 billion transactions and securing over $7 billion in total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols. The network’s growing influence has even led the CME Group to announce Solana futures contracts, which launched on March 17.
